As soon as the door closed behind Mika, Ubi Afsi rose from her chair and headed to the exit. Going through the double doors designed to minimize wind intrusion, she stepped onto the metal grate walkway running down the liner. Shiny bars like giant elongated jaws came up to her waist front below and down to her forehead from above, preventing all but the most determined or inept from accidentally falling from the speeding transport. The wind plucked at her, tugging at her short hair. She looked to her right, where the steel braces continued all along the liner. Half a car down, a figure in a dark uniform stood staring straight out into the black night. To anyone else, he was just another passenger, likely from the next car down. To Ubi Afsi, he was her urgent communication.

Stopping next to him and turning to face out into the night, hands gripping the bar, she said, “Did you hear all of that?”

“Most, I think.”

“Is she the one?”

“She is exactly the one we need.”

“What about him? I thought you wanted him here too.”

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a smile creep over his face.

“This is even better. Him being back home provides a side of ironic justice for me personally.”

“So what do you want me to do?”

“Keep doing what you are tasked to do and forward the Pajarron agenda. That objective is the key to our bigger plans.” He paused. “And it wouldn’t hurt for you to continue to be nice to her.”

They let the murky, misty, obsidian night rip past, hurling them toward dawn and their destination. The angry air lashed at them, violent but pathetically impotent as it snatched at their garments.

“Did you know?” she said after a long while.

“Know what?”

“That they had killed her father?”

“I didn’t. Or perhaps I heard and did not retain it. It is unimportant. You know there are always casualties in finding a balance. You tried to explain that to her, but she wouldn’t hear it. Any intelligent, enlightened person knows that excellence takes sacrifice. I thought you handled the situation well. Yes, we are sorry for her loss, but the ends justify the means.”

They stood staring into the darkness for only a minute longer before he spoke again. “Go get some sleep. I will see you and her in the morning.”
